Home of Gt.Grandparents
This is May Cottages and the home of my gt.grandparents James and Jane Childs. James was a shepherd on the Adhust Estate for John Bonham Carter and Jane looked after the sick and the poor here for 36 years. She also raised 6 of her own children including my grandfather William Childs.

Liss Infant School
I remember nothing of the school except the day a German plane flew low over the playground. The teachers quickly got us under cover but I could see my mother standing out in a field in a yellow rain hat. I did not know at the time that my father had seen the plane coming in low to strafe us and had run to an anti-aircraft gun (a bren gun?) in a vain attempt to shoot it down. He was at Longmoor Camp. Does anyone else remember this and did the playground actually get shot up? We only stayed in Liss for a short time. We were in a guest house or boarding house I think. The year would have been ...read more here

My Surname
I never knew there was such a place spelt exactly like my surname. I have been there twice in my life and purchased a book on Langrish. It made very interesting reading. I visited the village in 1987 and again in 2006. I found some changes in the village.
Looking forward to visiting your little village again very soon.

Extracts From Sheet & Hampshire books
Its brand new village hall, right of centre, is outwardly much the
same today although the inside is much changed. The Sir Arthur
Blomfield church, dedicated to St Mary Magdalen, was built a
generation before, almost at the same time as the school nestling
behind the trees on the left. The carts brought provisions every day
from Petersfield.

The about-turn view
of the last picture,
this shows the
unmistakable path
beaten across The
Green to the Queen’s
Head. Between the
village hall and the
large windowless
barn on the left, the
picturesque group of
houses has now been
converted to Lion
House. Village Street
leads away downhill to
the old post office.

This interesting picture
shows the bridge
over the Rother at the
bottom of Adhurst
Hill. The post office on
the right superseded
the toll house on the
turnpike (1711). Note
the semicircular door
made to reflect the
similar shape of the
toll keeper’s office. The
old convalescent home
in the background is
now two houses.

In this photograph
the line of washing
on the right seems to
indicate a Monday
morning. A loaded
cart has been backed
up, with its load of
corn for milling, and
the millpond looks
to be in good order.
The trap behind, with
bowler-hatted driver,
belonged to C Evans.

Ruts either side of this ravine prove
the use of this short cut to West Mark.
Then a shady summer drive, now this
cleft in the sandstone is overgrown
and impassable - all part of the Sheet
Common adventure.
