Hampshire memories
Cranborne 1938
I was living at Cranborne where my father was the police sergeant. At the time of a crisis, members of the government came to stay with Lord Cranborne at the manor.
The matter of security arose and it was decided a policeman should be on duty at all times as he would notice any strangers. Around the same period the massive German air ship flew over at a few 1000 feet. The Hindenberg; the largest thing I have ever seen in the sky.

Cranborne in the early sixties
I lived in Cranborne for two years from November 1963. My father owned the shops at the far end of the terrace in this picture and the building immediately facing, although it was derelict at that time. My sister and I were enrolled in the local secondary school that had opened two months earlier.

There was also another lady, sadly deceased, called Mrs Sturney that would have adopted me but was sadly considered "too old". Any information on these people gladly welcomed.

Orphanage
I was looked after by a lovely lady called Sister (Enid) Butler who took in unwanted children until they were re- homed either by fostering or adoption (this was me).
There was a young lad there called Peter who allegedly set fire to the original building with a cigarette end. I was adopted in about 1962 by a family who lived in Kent, and had a happy childhood all bar the bullying at school which I dealt with. I think there was also another lady known to me as Sister Edenbridge. Sadly both these ladies are now deceased. The village school is an integral part of a rural community, allowing children to be educated close to home. Older youngsters often have to go further afield to complete their education.

On the border between Dorset and Hampshire, Alderholt lies on the edge of the great medieval hunting ground of Cranborne Chase. In early hunting parlance a forest was a hunting ground in the exclusive possession of the monarch; a chase was the preserve of minor royalty, the nobility or a gentleman.

An older chapel at Alderholt fell into ruin during the reign of Charles II. The original was used by huntsmen to bless their expeditions into the wilderness of Cranborne Chase. The replacement gives an idea of how the earlier chapel might have looked.

Alderholt is a pleasant place to visit, surrounded as it is by the woods and heaths of the old hunting ground of Cranborne Chase. An ancient chapel once stood here, used by huntsman in Stuart times. This ‘Ebenezer’ chapel is a more recent replacement.

Alderholt’s mill was probably established in medieval times, though the present building is a hotchpotch of later architectural styles. During the latter half of the 20th century the mill was restored and opened to visitors as a craft centre and art gallery.
